Påve Franciskus arbetade under hela sitt pontifikat målmedvetet på att reformera kyrkan, både uppifrån genom en kuriareform och nedifrån, vilket den synodala processen handlar om, och göra alla kyrkans medlemmar medvetna om deras roll som medvandrare och ansvariga medlemmar i kyrkans gemenskap för det övergripande målet som är att nå ut med evangeliet till hela mänskligheten, särskilt de fattiga. Det handlar i grund och botten om att omsätta Andra Vatikankonciliets dokument i praktiken.

Påve Leo fortsätter i samma riktning. Han har understrukit vikten av synodalitet, och nu i sin julhälsning till kurian tar man inte miste på var hans prioriteringar ligger. Det är ett fint och trosstärkande tal som uppfordrar till omvändelse. Det kunde lika gärna kan vara riktat till oss alla. Han refererar till Evangelii gaudium, en programförklaring för Franciskus pontifikat och backar upp kuriareformen:

”His [Franciskus] prophetic voice, pastoral style and rich magisterium have marked the Church’s journey in recent years, encouraging us above all to place God’s mercy at the center, to give renewed impetus to evangelization, and to be a joyful Church, welcoming to all and attentive to the poorest.”

Han backar också upp Franciskus kuria-reform som ville forma kurian att vara inriktad på evangelisation och inte låta gamla maktstrukturer stå i vägen:

”Structures must not weigh down or slow the progress of the Gospel or hinder the dynamism of evangelization; instead, we must “make them more mission-oriented” (Evangelii Gaudium, 27).
In the spirit of our baptismal co-responsibility, therefore, we are all called to cooperate in Christ’s mission. The work of the Curia, too, must be animated by this spirit and foster pastoral solicitude in service to the particular Churches and their pastors. We need an ever more missionary Roman Curia, in which institutions, offices and tasks are conceived in light of today’s major ecclesial, pastoral and social challenges, and not merely to ensure ordinary administration.”

Han drar också kontinuitetslinjerna bakåt till påve Paul VI´s viktiga postkonciliära dokument, evangelisationsmaning, Evangelii nuntiandi som promulgerades för 50 år sedan:

”Lastly, I would recall that fifty years ago, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Paul VI promulgated the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, written after the Third Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.  Among others, it emphasizes two essential realities: first, that “it is the whole Church that receives the mission to evangelize, and the work of each individual member is important for the whole” (no.15).  Second, it affirms that “the first means of evangelization is the witness of an authentically Christian life, given over to God in a communion that nothing should destroy and at the same time given to one’s neighbor with limitless zeal” (no. 41).

Let us remember this also in our curial service: the work of each is important for the whole, and the witness of a Christian life, expressed in communion, is the first and greatest service we can offer.”

Nyss firade vi sextioårsminnet av Andra Vatikankonciliets avslutning. En del har skrivits om detta, P Fredrik Heiding SJ har skrivit en faktabok om ämnet som nyligen presenterades (Veritas förlag). Men en faktabok, hur välstrukturerad och relevant den än är kan inte tillnärmelsevis förmedla betydelsen av ett koncilium. Samtidigt som medvetenheten om konciliet idag är väldigt låg, även bland praktiserande katoliker, så skulle jag säga att allt som händer idag i kyrkan har med konciliet att göra.
